Fiducial Generalized Pivots for a Variance Component vs. an Approximate Confidence Interval
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract. The paper is devoted to comparison of different confidence intervals for a variance component corresponding to the random factor in mixed linear models with two variance components. Namely, generalized confidence intervals (based on fiducial generalized pivots (FGP), see Hannig et al. (2006)) are compared to an approximate solution suggested by El-Bassiouni (1994). We focus on FGPs of certain types that were shown to yield exact intervals in some limiting situations. This makes them more equivalent counterparts to the El-Bassiouni’s interval, if frequentist properties are the main concern. A simulation study is presented that reveals, how besides sharing the limiting properties, these FGPs and the mentioned approximate interval perform with respect to each other. We also comment on a relationship between the considered types of FGPs.

Confidence intervals for a variance component: Focused on generalized inference approach
Construction of confidence intervals for a variance component corresponding to the random factor in mixed linear models with two variance components is considered. At first, attention is drawn to an approximate confidence interval suggested by El-Bassiouni (1994), which is an extension of the well known Williams-Tukey interval. Though the stated interval has some nice properties, it is not very...
متن کاملFiducial Generalized Confidence Intervals
Generalized pivotal quantities (GPQs) and generalized confidence intervals (GCIs) have proven to be useful tools for making inferences in many practical problems. Although GCIs are not guaranteed to have exact frequentist coverage, a number of published and unpublished simulation studies suggest that the coverage probabilities of such intervals are sufficiently close to their nominal value so a...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Comparison of Approximate Tolerance Intervals for the Poisson Distribution
The problem of finding tolerance intervals receives very much attention of researchers and are widely used in various statistical fields, including biometry, economics, reliability analysis and quality control. Tolerance interval is a random interval that covers a specified proportion of the population with a specified confidence level. In this paper, we compare approximate tolerance interva...
متن کاملInferences on the Generalized Variance under Normality
Generalized variance is applied for determination of dispersion in a multivariate population and is a successful measure for concentration of multivariate data. In this article, we consider constructing confidence interval and testing the hypotheses about generalized variance in a multivariate normal distribution and give a computational approach. Simulation studies are performed to compare thi...
متن کاملGeneralized Fiducial Inference for Normal Linear Mixed Models By
While linear mixed modeling methods are foundational concepts introduced in any statistical education, adequate general methods for interval estimation involving models with more than a few variance components are lacking, especially in the unbalanced setting. Generalized fiducial inference provides a possible framework that accommodates this absence of methodology. Under the fabric of generali...
